Yoga Nidra

Yoga Nidra is an ancient practice which is derived from the tantric yoga tradition. Yoga Nidra literally translates as "yogic sleep." Yoga nidra is the experience of entering a state of mind akin to the deepest state of sleep with conscious awareness. At this level, the brain produces Delta waves, the slowest possible brainwaves, which are profoundly beneficial to the body, mind, and spirit. Anyone who has taken a yoga class knows how putting your body into certain yogic postures can induce deep relaxation in the body.

Yoga Nidra class is like a yoga class for the mind. By putting your mind through a systematic sequence of mental exercises which are organized to stimulate different parts of the brain, your mind automatically goes into a deep state of relaxation. The practice itself promotes whole-brain functioning. You will surely find the practice profoundly relaxing and refreshing...more refreshing than a good night's sleep even! In time, you may even find yourself lucid dreaming!

Yoga Nidra is also a powerful ancient tool for self-transformation. It is recommended that you reflect upon an area of your life in which you would like to see improvement or change and bring a "sankalpa" or resolution with you to Yoga Nidra class. Often we try to plant positive affirmations in the hardened soil of our waking consciousness without success. The state of Yoga Nidra, however, is an extremely fertile state of mind, where you can plant affirmations deep below the critical filter.

Yoga Nidra class begins with some light asanas to loosen and relax the physical body and some light pranayama to sharpen the awareness, which is followed by a lengthy (around 40 min) session of guided meditation and relaxation in shavasana. Please bring a mat, blanket, and/or any pillows you may need to feel comfortable lying on the floor for an extended period of time. Classes meet from 6-7:30 on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of each month. Class fee: $15. Lakshmi Nair will facilitate.
